Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad is that men who have sex with men (MSM) is a "disease" and "unnatural" has angered the film fraternity. More and more actors like Bipasha Basu and Nandita Das are expressing their dissatisfaction with the comments.
Azad clarified its position Tuesday, saying his words were taken out of context, noting that while some people say it is not natural, some say it's natural.
This is that celebrities have to say:
Bipasha Basu: Homosexuality can not be ignored or lack of respect! Human beings have a right to sexual preference. At a time when everyone gradually legalizing gay marriage, which in this country at least need to open our eyes and not discriminate against the gay community.
Farhan Akhtar: Azad should apologize for discriminating against citizens of India on the basis of sexual orientation. There is no scientific evidence to justify their comments. I'm surprised they made such a statement.
Juhi Chawla: I used to think that way. Many of us are raised in a conservative environment. But as I got older, I realized gay people have inherent qualities that have come to them genetically and not as a result of social conditioning. It's not like gay people get to be unconventional or rebellious. They are what they are because that is born.
Nandita Das: I am appalled by the ignorance of the Minister of Health. He is in a position of responsibility, so their ignorance can not be overlooked, as it sends the wrong messages. In this day and age that legitimizes same-sex marriage around the world and our own Delhi High Court has decriminalized homosexuality, I am amazed at how uninformed and insensitive to our minister is.
Sohail Khan: This is a very individual choice. And we respect that.
Pooja Bedi: It may be unnatural for him. But very natural for others! (Comments Azad) clearly illustrates the urgent need for people with sensitivity, maturity and wisdom to be in positions of authority.
Yana Gupta: How do you know that unhealthy? Have you tried? I believe that sex can be beautiful when there is love. And who are we to judge whether or not there can be love between same sex? I believe that one should not go around issuing an opinion on something he or she has experienced.
Chitrangda Singh: There will always be people of all generations who have rigid attitudes. Unfortunately, sometimes in positions of power. I feel everyone should be allowed their own opinions and beliefs.
C: How can something that hundreds of people indulge be unnatural? It may be unpopular to some, interesting for some and for others unbelievable. But natural? No chance!
Fardeen Khan: For heterosexual homosexuality, never seems natural, and vice versa. The important thing is that nobody has the right to judge or discriminate against anyone based on sexual preference. I'm all for celebrating one's sexuality with pride and dignity.
Pritish Nandy: I'm surprised that a man like Azad say this. It's just off the 19th century. Then it is said that women should stay at home and cooking is not natural for women to go to work. In the 21st century, why have ministers with the mentality of the 19?
