Like dancing the waltz, fox trot, rumba-ing Cinderellas, newcomers and the regulars both fall into their dancing shoes and fell transformation in the ballroom Maplewood Dance Center every Wednesday.

On a recent rainy night, 60 pairs of shoes during the day were abandoned at the door of the ballroom of Portland.

From shows like "Dancing With the Stars" and "So You Think You Can Dance" re-popularized the activity, Maplewood has seen a surge of interest, said owner Joan Vance.

"We have people all the time you come and say, 'We want to dance like they do in the (TV)," said Vance. The show, which debuted in 2005, the couple from List B, celebrities and sports stars former professional dancers. The couples go through grueling practices and dance contests, with a pair eliminated each week until a winner standing.

While the economy has withdrawn the ballroom assistance in another direction, dance the prime-time studies have been a resurgence of dance students, said Vance.

"They reinforce the determination of people to learn," he said. "They make it more realistic. The football players and actors start dancing and people see how they progress through the season and think, 'I can do that too. I can dance."

Maplewood, even gave up his country dance class Friday night to accommodate the interests of ballroom dancing.

Six weeks to two minutes

Patty Medina, an instructor in the fit to live superior fitness program, has used the crazy dance show to support the annual fundraiser, Dancing with the Community.

Local celebrities like Joe WCSH-TV quota for Channel 6, Kevin Scott, a candidate for governor 2010; Jill Duson and a former mayor of Portland, are paired with local dance instructors from the American Ballroom Dance Academy, Dance Hall Maine, pulse and Maplewood, and the practice of six weeks for a two-minute performance during April.

A crowd of 260 and a panel of judges selected the winners. The event raised $ 3,500 in 2010 and $ 5,000 in 2011 to fit to live, supported jointly with the City of South Portland.

After the competition and a professional showcase, the forum is open to the public to dance.

"Each region of the world has a dance. Everybody wants to dance," said Medina. "Seeing the celebrities and dancers trained in television gives them permission."

'A cabinet right foot "

In a small space, reflected, with floors of red and white checkered, Vance teaches beginner lessons before the dance on the main floor is started. She teaches a visiting professor, often ballroom Maine, and her daughter, Kathleen Vance.

"People come here saying," But I have two left feet. We say 'Well, we have a closet full of right, "said Kathleen." We pride ourselves on being very friendly. "

The ballroom is custom Maplewood, until the 3,300 cups cushions under the wooden dance floor, by John Vance, who is now the DJ and wears a uniform of a captain of sailing.

"I think this place as my boat," he said. "The secret is that there can be a DJ unless you're a dancer. Nothing requests all night. I know how to mix."

Red Christmas lights and garlands of flowers faux pass over the spacious floor. Tables line the edge of the track and switch between people having a drink and get up to dance.

Karen Bickford of Falmouth has been coming to Maplewood on Wednesday for five years. She said she likes to be active and social dancing has always liked.

"The rumba is my favorite. It is a sexy Latin dance. It is soft," he said.

It started with the rumba, said her dancing partner, Brion Gorham O'Donnell, who said Bickford would dance if ever offered Maplewood rumba classes.

He has been coming to the dances for more than three years.

"I could not imagine enjoying it, but I came and I found it fun and challenging. There's always more to learn," he said.

"And you can not beat the dance floor."
