When jazz trumpeter with the sandpaper voice affectionately known as "Satchmo" or "Pops," died 40 years ago today, he left behind a legacy of a serious musician and clown young performer.

But afterward, the explorations of Louis Armstrong discovered that the man who sang scat, became the music of his native city of New Orleans funeral parades and Honky Tonks in his own art form, and almost improvised at will, was so serious about their music at the end of his life as when you started.

Armstrong was also almost always ridiculous on stage, but could not take seriously the reality of the time who lived in late 1960, during a performance at Basin Street East in Manhattan, the great pianist Erroll Garner received Armstrong with a "Hey, all you Pops, how are you?" Armstrong replied, without missing a beat, "Whites continue to lead."

Armstrong made almost to the day of his death, hatred had to retire the number of shows for health reasons.

"The need to entertain," the message of Jonathan Yardley writes, "was as powerful as their need to make music."

Forty years after Armstrong's heart is not far from his music, and the fans who adored him, we are still listening to his deep voice, trying to match their playing the trumpet striking, and even entertaining watching.

See Armstrong perform the most beloved works, "What a Wonderful World":
