Synopsis:

Captain Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) is haunted by dreams of how he was ordered to massacres Indian women and children in General Custer's army. Algren agrees to go to Japan to train the Emperor's newly formed army to use guns. For six months work, he will receive three years pay. The new army is to put down a rebellion against the Emperor's Westernization policies. The rebellion is led by a Samurai warrior named Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe) who follows ancient teaching and a traditional way of life.

The army is not ready for battle; they cannot even hit the target when firing their rifles, but Omura orders them into battle anyway. They march against Katsumoto, whom they outnumber four to one. The army has guns, while the samurai fight only with swords and arrows. Because the Japanese officers are not ready to lead, Algren stays at the front with the men. The samurai approach on horseback, the inexperienced army panics and fires to soon. While they are reloading their rifles, they are overrun. Algren fights in hand to hand combat, making a valiant stand against four samuai. His tenacity causes Katsumoto to spare his life and take him prisoner. The samurai return to the mountain village for the winter.

Synopsis:

Filmmaker Gus Van Sant wrote and directed this meditation on stardom and its costs, inspired in part by the life and death of rock musician Kurt Cobain. Blake (Michael Pitt) is the leader of an influential alternative rock band who has unexpectedly won a large degree of fame and fortune. Depressed and unsure of what to do with himself or his success, Blake wanders about the run-down mansion he calls home and the visits the woods nearby. While a handful of friends live with Blake, he prefers to avoid them, as they often seem more interested in money or help with their music than in his friendship; meanwhile, Blake is also confronted by a handful of fans, his agent, and a gentleman who sells advertising space in a telephone directory and has no idea who Blake is. As Blake goes through the motions of his day, he tries to decide what he should do next, and what might finally free him from his ennui. Shot and edited in the same languid, low-key manner as his films Elephant and Gerry, Last Days also stars Lukas Haas, Asia Argento, Scott Green, Ricky Jay, and Harmony Korine. Kim Gordon of the band Sonic Youth also appears in the film, while her husband and bandmate Thurston Moore was a consultant for the musical score; both were friends of Kurt Cobain and toured in tandem with Nirvana on several occasions.

Synopsis:

In 1757, the British and French are battling for control of North America in the French and Indian War. Though the colonists are bound by law to join the militia to aid the British, many of them are reluctant to leave their homes and families defenseless. Chingachgook (Russell Means), his son Uncas (Eric Schweig), and Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis), his adopted white son, visit the Cameron household. Jack Winthrop (Edward Blatchford) tells Hawkeye that he is gathering volunteers for the British army. The next morning, Jack and a group of others go to Albany, New York, to obtain terms from General Webb, who agrees to grant them leave if their homes are attacked. Satisfied, they join the British forces at Fort William Henry, sixty miles north of Albany. Cora Munro (Madeleine Stowe) and her sister Alice (Jodhi May) have received word from their father, Colonel Edmund Munro (Maurice Roëves), the commander of the British garrison at the fort, to meet him there. A native guide named Magua (Wes Studi) and a detachment of British soldiers commanded by Major Duncan Heyward (Steven Waddington) escort the women on the trail. However, they are ambushed by Hurons led by Magua himself. Heyward, Cora and Alice are rescued by Hawkeye and his companions, who have been tracking the war band. Magua prepares to shoot Cora, but Hawkeye forces him to flee. The rescuers reluctantly agree to escort the survivors to Fort William Henry.

Synopsis:

Set in New York City, Last Night is the story of a married couple that while apart for one night, confronted by temptation that may decide the fate of their marriage. Joanna (Keira Knightley) and Michael Reed (Sam Worthington) are 7 years into a successful and happy relationship. They are moving along in their lives together until Joanna meets Laura (Eva Mendes), the stunningly beautiful work colleague whom Michael never mentioned. While Michael is away with Laura on a business trip, Joanna runs into an old but never quite forgotten love, Alex (Guillaume Canet) and agrees to have drinks with him. As the night progresses and temptation increases for the couple, each must confront who they are inside and outside of their relationship. In the final scene, Michael goes back earlier to his wife and restates, truthfully, that he loves her. Joanna does not reply. They pull apart from the embrace and Michael gazes at her searchingly. Joanna, gazing past Michael, inhales sharply as if to speak and the film cuts to black. In the director's mind, this scene expresses two kind of unfaithfulness, body and soul, to which men and women are both, inclined on a different degree, suggesting that men are more often physically unfaithful and still deeply in love with their wives, while women are stronger in resisting bodily temptations, although they cannot control their heart. Last Night is ultimately a film about choices - the choice you make to be with someone, to give yourself physically and emotionally, and how to survive all three.

Synopsis:

Synopsis:
