In the tradition of Lost In Translation and The Squid and the Whale, Paper Man is a wonderfully quirky drama about people trying desperately to find the same joy in real life as they do in their imagination. Golden Globe and Tony nominee Jeff Daniels stars as Richard Dunn, a no-hit wonder of a novelist squirreled away in Long Island by his sensible, surgeon wife (Emmy Winner Lisa Kudrow) to get cracking on his next novel. Richard isn't totally alone: along for the ride is a local teen (Emma Stone) who befriends Richard after he hires her to be a babysitter ... his babysitter. Plus, there's Richard's imaginary best friend from childhood, Captain Excellent (Ryan Reynolds), a confidante always ready to prod him along towards adulthood, whether Richard wants it or not. Aching, funny and true, Paper Man is a genuinely offbeat gem that marks the promising debut of writing and directing team Kieran and Michele Mulroney.

Episodic saga from the first half of the 20th century follows Hero Hua from an ill-omened June day in his youth to a showdown 17 years later with a disaffected member of his martial-arts school, a Japanese named Invincible. Hero marries Jade, leaves her in China when he goes to America as an indentured servant, rebels against cruel labor conditions, and is joined by her in New York City where she has twins. Jump ahead 16 years: their son Sword comes to New York looking for his father. There, Sword hears many stories of his father, which we see in flashbacks, and the stage is set for the battle with Invincible.

Synopsis:

International megastar Donnie Yen reprises his iconic role as the real-life kung fu grandmaster Ip Man in this martial arts spectacular. After escaping the Japanese occupation of his hometown of Foshan, China, Ip Man and his family have arrived in Hong Kong, which is living under the iron fist of British colonial rule. Ip wants to support his family by opening up a martial arts academy to teach his unique Wing Chun style. But a corrupt cabal of Hong Kong martial arts masters, led by Hung Chun-nam (the legendary Sammo Hung), refuses to allow Ip to teach until he proves himself- and prove himself he does, in an intense series of fights against the masters showcasing a dazzling variety of martial arts styles, culminating in a highly anticipated brawl between Ip and Hung atop a rickety table. But even after gaining the respect of the masters, Ip's troubles are far from over. Hong Kong under British rule is a world of corruption, and when a Western-style boxer named TaylorTwister Milos comes to town to entertain the British upper-class, and insults both Chinese martial arts and the native citizens in a horrifically violent way, Ip must step up and fight for the honor of both his kung fu and the Chinese people. Forced by honor to enter a brutal King of the Ring boxing match against Twister, it's East versus West in an amazing, knock-down drag-out fight to the finish, the likes of which have never been seen on-screen before.

Iron Man 2 picks up right after the first movie. After the heroic, very public victory that Iron Man had over his mentor in the first movie, he has become a International Icon. Tony Stark is not your typical superhero. Being the narcissistic billionaire that he is, Tony reveals to the world that he is Iron Man. We all know the basic rules of being a super hero. Once you do that, you leave yourself open to all the enemies that you ever had wanting to get famous at your expense.

Iron Man is one of my favorite Marvel characters and I felt after the first film that Robert Downey Junior embodies everything that I picture in Tony Stark. He still has a great deal of chemistry with Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow). While I felt her role was probably one of the weaker parts of the film. Also, new for this edition of the film, is Don Cheadle as Col. James 'Rhodey' Rhodes, Stark's best friend. We remember that Rhodey was played by Terrence Howard in the first film. I think Cheadle did a much better job with the role. There is a great deal of personal struggle that I think Cheadle portrays very well. Does he side with his friend or his government, which he is sworn to protect?

This movie also expands on S.H.I.E.L.D.'s involvement with this story arc. We get to see Samuel L. Jackson be his awesome self as Nick Fury. Also, this allowed for one of my favorite parts of the movie, Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow Natasha Romanoff. There is something special about a smoking hot secret agent in pleather kicking butt.

The major plot device is the demons that Tony struggles with. How can the thing that is keeping him alive be killing him? The film explores Stark's alcoholism and the race he has to re-engineer the very thing that is keeping him alive. At Stark's lowest point, Rhodey gets away with a suit prototype and War Machine is born.

I think Iron Man 2 was funny and action packed. What it did the best however was not take itself seriously and have that almost zany feel that you get from an actual comic. MORE robots and explosions seemed to be the mantra of the entire movie. Whether it be Tony Stark being an ass, or Black widow kicking some I want to give Iron Man 2 a 9 on the It's Geektime d10 of Metal Superheroes.
