Looking at the sky, Marjorie Shearer's hand raised to his mouth as his eyes filled with tears.
Flying low over Hood Canal, two Beechcraft Bonanza made a pass in the formation of more home North Shore Road.
Normally, Marjorie Shearer did not have plans for a second thought, but Sunday afternoon his presence meant more than two drivers taking advantage of a sunny day.
"I said, 'If you fly today, I know up there directing traffic," said Marjorie Shearer.
"He" is her late husband, William "Bill" Shearer, 87, who died in his sleep the week before. The couple would have celebrated their 66th wedding July 1.
On the day of his death, Marjorie Shearer was joined in the Belfair couple's home for their children and grandchildren. Everyone gathered to remember the family patriarch, a man who said he opened his home to any person who regularly told his children: "No one better than you, and you're no better than anyone."
The night he died, the family gathered near the roof of the cab of his daughter Kathy Hunter. Displaying the calm waters of Hood Canal just a few hundred meters from where they sat, talked about the retired Marine lieutenant, his love of dance, sport and the way it has always had an "I love you" and kiss their children and grandchildren whenever I saw them.
"We had just finished dinner, it was a beautiful sunny afternoon, the water was calm and then these four vintage aircraft flying," said Hunter. "It's something we all gave us goose bumps and said," Is Daddy there saying it's okay '. "
A day later the family was 4 miles down the road at the home of the couple's child when the planes flew straight back over his head. Everyone felt it was a sign.
"The first two times were to God and say hi to Grandpa," said granddaughter Selina Peikert-Shearer. "The third time was even them, I just need to make a phone call."
Seeing the comfort and happiness of the aircraft gave his grandmother, Peikert-Shearer called Bremerton National Airport to find the owners. She learned most of the riders were in town from outside the area to practice formation flying - where planes fly together in different configurations.
After a couple more questions, was given a phone number for Doug Haughton Poulsbo resident - who incidentally turned out to be a friend of his parents. When Peikert-Shearer said he wanted to surprise his family with a flyover during the celebration in honor of his grandfather's life, Haughton said he would do everything possible to make it happen.
Three other drivers were available and agreed to make three passes over the house. The final step would be to honor the end of World War II veteran with a missing man formation, where one of the four planes in the group stops and fly west, Haughton said. But on Sunday, the time allowed two of the pilots take off, leaving only two for the flyover.
Marjorie Shearer did not seem to mind. As I watched the two planes are shaken from side to side simulating a wave to the crowd, Marjorie Shearer waved back.
"Tip your wings, bill, tip their wings," she whispered to the sky.
