The driver of a motor boat involved in a high speed crash says he's never going to run again.

Pilot Champion Garry Sexton, of Invercargill, driving pure madness at the annual Milton Marathon Boat Club Lake Waihola Saturday.

The ship cannon shot in the lake and he and his passengers Lyn Burnett, in addition to Invercargill, were thrown from the boat.

Ms. Burnett, a hairdresser, remains in an induced coma in Dunedin Hospital.

Mr. Sexton, 47, who has a broken rib and shoulder blade, got home yesterday and said he was in a lot of pain.

"My concern is now Lyn and his family," he said.

Mr. Sexton, a champion of the South Island of class C, said he did not know what caused the accident.

"I'm still finding out, going over and over in my mind," he said.

"I checked the boat so many times - it was perfect the only thing I can think it might be something in the water.

"I do not understand. The water was calm and I was in complete control and no reason the boat veered to the right and were expelled," said Sexton.

"I am pedantic about safety and pure madness had passed a revision along with the racing boats before the race."

He has promised not to run for the accident.

"I will not race anymore. I have a family and too much of a risk ... the scariest part is that I do not know what happened. Would be a bit easier if I could understand.

"It was a lot of fear ... I think it's a life change," said Sexton.

"This accident was a very unusual thing to happen. I've been running for 20 years and never had an accident. This (Lake Waihola) was one of the calmer waters of the races."

Mr. Sexton Dunedin hospital again on Friday for a checkup and to visit with Ms. Burnett, who suffered broken ribs and chest and shoulder injuries and was in a coma to help manage your pain.

Mr. Sexton's brother, Paul, who was also competing in the event, said the cause is unknown in pure folly to roll, but it was possible that the ship was caught in the wake of another boat, or had suffered mechanical problems.

The convener and New Zealand Boat Race Marathon the Commission is likely to prepare a report to the Maritime New Zealand about the accident.
