ESPN has made top dog contest Nathan
"It is one of a kind," said Jerry Vaillancourt Monday morning, ESPN producer stating the obvious, as one of the largest circuses in the United States annually developed nearby.
"I do not think ESPN has nothing in comparison."
Um, no. But just in case there was any doubt, soon Rico Shea, president of Major League Eating and television analyst of famous Nathan's hot dog eating contest, stopped to say hello and to test one of his puns-pan focused on me.
If Joey Chestnut is to win his fifth straight game, mustard-yellow championship belt, Shea said: "He's the Bjorn Borg of variety."
Shea liked the line so much that he used in the TV show, along with references to all the crazy world of twins Winklevoss Anthony Weiner Gary Bettman to, finally, another reference to the chestnut after he did get his fifth championship in a row - just like the Yankees of 1949-1953.
Said Shea, "He is the risotto Phil Rizzuto."
Remember, this is the president of the league. Imagine, Roger Goodell, working as an analyst and Super Bowl conjure punny nicknames for Peyton Manning.
That's the beauty of the approach of television Coney Island Nathan tradition, dating back to 1916 and joined patriotism, greed, marketing and quirky humor well, with a bow of America ordered.
ESPN, which has carried the event live since 2004, has shopped at the dry humor of the man page bite bite brothers Paul and Shea - George Rich brother is the announcer - and became the event in a local show one with international reach.
"We really helped pole vault in what is today," said Rich Shea. "While we have 40,000 people here, we have almost two million homes tuning in
"They try to mess with good reason, such as athletes, but they also embrace the pomp, and it's kind of the magic of our game, we say."
ESPN senior director of programming and acquisitions Jason Bernstein said the contest for a long time, "resonated with people of ESPN, and we finally got out."
Does the network never received complaints about the pure disgustingness all this?
"I really do not get negative feedback," said Bernstein. "It is widely recognized championship every championship race tracks in the eating. I think the fans will certainly appreciate the competition for what it is."
The first years of association with the rivalry between Chestnut and six-time champion Takeru Kobayashi, who has missed the last two events of Nathan in a contract dispute with the MLE.
Last year, she was taken after a scuffle with police. This year, consuming 69 hot dogs - seven more than Brown - in an official competition, simultaneously, in Manhattan.
Page and Shea Kobayashi discussed, with emphasis on negotiating MLE Shea, but Kobayashi is "not want to talk."
With Brown undisputed queen at the moment, the transmission continues to add new wrinkles.
This year, that included shots dirigible, a piece of Sports Science bites Brown about more than most can chew, new court reporter in the former Broncos cheerleader Renee Herlocker and recorded highlights of the first contest of all women won by Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas.
(George Shea Thomas assume underestimated: "The evil personified - the darkness always pursued west on Sunrise.")
A constant is a sense of humor. "It is an event of pun-mature," said Rich Shea. "But the truth is that the line you use, the funny thing is, if you ask me."
Vaillancourt said: "We have to play as a serious sporting event and the irony does not escape the audience. They are smart enough to understand the big picture, and that makes it more fun."
Now what? There are only so many ways to get hot dogs through the esophagus, right?
"I think next year, maybe we'll see in 3-D," said Shea.
Really? Is it a good idea? Vaillancourt, said: "We thought and discussed."
Move over, United States.
