The Bears never resolved what to do with Greg Olsen, than to trot him to the front of the cameras using plugs and gloves pink to promote breast cancer awareness. He is good to have a social conscience and connecting with the audience.

It's also good to stretch the seam and make big plays. He was not able to do enough of that in his four years with the Bears, but now after being sent to the Panthers on Thursday for a third-round pick in 2012.

Olsen should have been in the Pro Bowl by now. He has that kind of skill. But he did not have that kind of game plans.

Give the Bears credit for this: If they could make their way round hole square peg, at least recognize it. Matt Spaeth is the type of tight end Mike Martz likes. Olsen is not.

What general manager Jerry Angelo did Thursday was what I wanted to Martz.

Olsen was being lost in Chicago. There was a reception of 25 yards or more last year. There are 127 NFL players who had more than one.

His career bears, Olsen average of 10.2 yards per reception. In the last four years, 35 tight ends best average of at least one season, including such forgettable names as Joel Dreessen, Joe Klopfenstein and David Martin.

Olsen also averaged 32 yards per game during the same period of time. Around the NFL, 21 tight ends had better results in at least one season.

Do not think for a second 35 tight ends, or even 21 tight ends are the most talented receivers Olsen.

"Easily one of the most talented receiving tight ends 10 in the league," said one personnel director of the NFC, he was surprised to see Olsen traded.

Olsen posted a 4.51 40 yards in the 2007 Scouting Combine. His speed translates to the football field, too, making it one of the fastest tight ends in the league.

That speed opposing defenses seemed to affect more than happy the Bears.

"We had a difficult time matching with it," said the man staff. "You always have to account for it, and when they play two tight ends and stretch it, you do not know whether to play nickel or base. It could jeopardize your defense."

Players like Olsen is worth double its plan. But the Bears tried to turn the player. They wanted important in blocking and the lowest in the reception.

Olsen should be a better fit with the Panthers. He will meet with one of his college coaches, Rob Chudzinski, who, curiously, was not interested in becoming the offensive coordinator when the Bears met with the team before last season. If Chudzinski had gotten a job instead of Martz is safe to assume that Olsen would not call the moving vans this morning.

Although Olsen will call a game that feels better, probably will not have a quarterback that fits you best. It may take a while before you start spending Cam Newton and Jay Cutler.

Moreover, the vaunted relationship with Cutler Olsen does not really benefit him as much as I should have. The two seemed to have great chemistry in various parts of River North. That chemistry was less evident a few miles away at Soldier Field.

Cutler lost a friend. Charities Chicago lost an advocate. And the Bears' offense lost an average of blocking tight end.

The Bears made a thoroughbred and tried to turn it into a horse.
