Jose Reyes took batting practice, when the All-Stars worked on Monday, although it is on the disabled list. So did Ryan Braun of the Milwaukee Brewers. Both players were chosen at first, but could not play due to injury.
"Whenever I have the opportunity to come, I go, no matter what happens," said Reyes, Mets shortstop.
Of course, Reyes has never been through the exhaustion of a pursuit of 3,000 hits, and do not know how it feels to be 37 and coming off a calf injury. Derek Jeter of the Yankees, who does it, is skipping the All-Star festivities despite being on the active roster and voted to start with the fans.
When asked if he thought Jeter had an obligation to be here, Reyes said: "I do not think so.'s Good to be here. I like. As a baseball player, you want to be in the All-Star Game. But you have to understand Jeter. He is coming back from injury, and is good for him to take a break. "
Carlos Beltran of the Mets, who batted second as the starting point of the National League designated hitter, said he knew Jeter's situation and how bad the calf was bothering him.
"Jose is on the disabled list, but decided to come," Beltran said. "I think as a ballplayer, if you have injuries, you should be here. The fans are the ones who vote for you and want you here. For players with injuries, sometimes prefer to do the rest, take treatment and try to improve for the season. "
Eighty-four players recognized as All-Stars: 68, to be active on Tuesday, and 16 were replaced. Of these, six are on the disabled list, six are pitchers who are not eligible because it began on Sunday, and four were dropped due to nagging injuries.
In addition to Jeter, the group includes Yankees Mariano 'Rivera (triceps), David Price of Tampa Bay (turf toe) of Philadelphia and Placido Polanco (back). But the price and Polanco's here.
"It's a personal decision people have to do, and we must respect that decision," said Diamondbacks manager of Kirk Gibson, a National League coach who never played in the All-Star Game. "I am not critical. I refused twice - saying he was not right, is the decision I made. Some people are not here, for whatever reason, but the people here is an honor to be here, that will take the experience and represent us well. "
With so many players recognized as All-Stars, few complain of being neglected. But there are still some notable omissions, including Atlanta starter Tommy Hanson and slugging first baseman Albert Pujols of St. Louis and Ryan Howard of the Phillies.
Hanson is 10-4 with 2.44 earned run average, but manager Bruce Bochy said he gave NL the last fill instead of pitching to his team mate Craig Kimbrel Hanson because he needed a reliever than a starter. Bochy said he chose Arizona's Miguel Montero fill elsewhere, because it has three first basemen and wanted a third catcher.
Bochy did not spend much time discussing who should be their starting pitcher, Roy Halladay choice of the Phillies. "That was easy for me," Bochy said.
