A man from East Hanover, which appeared in the "Cake Boss" show TLC pleaded guilty yesterday to sexually assaulting a girl.
Remigio "Remy" Gonzalez, 33, reached an agreement with prosecutors, admitted in Superior Court in Morristown who sexually assaulted a 13-year-old twice. The attacks occurred between July 1, 2009, and March 8, 2010, in East Hanover and Florham Park.
As part of the reason, the prosecution amended the first-degree aggravated sexual assault charges of second-degree charges, which carry a presumptive prison sentence of five to 10 years in prison. Prosecutors also dropped by almost two counts of the original 15 counts of indictment.
Gonzalez appeared in the reality "Cake Boss" show set in Hoboken, and was married to the sister of main character Buddy Valastro. Yesterday, the use of handcuffs and a yellow jail suit, kept his eyes downcast except when he addressed the judge.
Morris County Prosecutor Robert Bianchi said his office will seek to oust Gonzales, who emigrated from Mexico, once his sentence is up.
"We refuse to negotiate this case for anything other than a prison sentence," said Bianchi.
Gonzalez will have to serve a minimum of 85 percent of his sentence, Judge Stuart Minkowitz said. You are prohibited from having contact with the victim, his parents and siblings, must pay court costs and must register as a sex offender under Megan's Law.
Gonzalez was arrested on August 17, 2009, by the Office of the Prosecutor of Morris County. At first he denied the assault, but "began to mourn and admitted that he participated in acts" of sexual assault when he said the teen was being taken to a doctor, according to the affidavit.
Gonzalez is in the Morris County Jail, with bail set at $ 300,000. Sentencing is scheduled for August 5.
