Stan Steinke is a type of all-American man. He grew up on a farm, went to school in a one-room school, is a veteran of the U.S. Army and is a fan of dedicated Chicago Cubs.
His wife of 55 years, Kris, born in Sweden and moved to the United States in 1954 when he was 22 years old. She feels like an all-American kind of gal - "I'm very patriotic, too," he said.
Kris has dual citizenship in the United States and Sweden, and loves the excitement that comes with the Fourth of July holiday.
"It's probably the best country," he said. "I think I chose well."
The Steinke spent part of his day today at the annual Independence Day spectacular ComEd at Starlight Theatre Rock Valley College. The annual event features the Rockford Symphony Orchestra, singing patriotic songs and fireworks, plus an "All-American" picnic before the concert.
The field day
Attendees feasted on pulled pork, hot dogs, brats, salads and cookies, catering to the grill a few hundred hot dogs and golf clubs. They filled the picnic tables on the campus of Rock Valley College, and most of the attendees wore patriotic march - stars and stripes shirts, dresses in red and blue pants, and other outfits inspired by the American flag .
The concert
The event also featured Emily Rogers, the winner of the competition RSO star. The orchestra was scheduled to perform classics like the 1812 Overture and John Philip Sousa, "Stars and Stripes Forever."
For Mary Ann Johnson, Independence Day reminds him of fireworks, the U.S. flag and country. It also means singing patriotic songs like "America the Beautiful," "My country is yours" and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic."
The best part
For 9-year-old Elliot - in today's event with her parents, Veronica and Jerome Weiskopf - the July 4 offered the opportunity to wear a red hat, white and blue and a red shirt, blue and white checkered - with red, white shoes and blue game he designed.
Elliot said he was waiting for the music and the fireworks - the fireworks were her favorite part of the show last year.
Veronica said Independence Day is about family, meet friends and celebrate. For Jerome, in a country so great is the highlight.
