Thus, as if we have not seen enough earthquakes and tsunamis of this year, New Zealand has just hit another. New Zealand was beaten by an earthquake of 7.6 magnitude on the present (originally reported as a 7.8-magnitude earthquaje) according to the USGS, and followed the local tsunami warnings. However, the tsunami warning has been canceled by what I found.

The earthquake was felt in most New Zealand Kermadec Islands in the Pacific Ocean, remote islands that are essentially uninhabited. Just a weather station there and a hostel for visiting scientists.

The tsunami caused by the earthquake is expected to affect Keramecs, Tonga and New Zealand, but not much.

You can see the map on the top of the USGS, where the earthquake occurred (as circled in red).

Of course, after the terrible earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand earlier this year, causing glaciers to divide and kill tens, and the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the news that an earthquake of great magnitude occurred near the country once again has worried many. Luckily, this time struck off the coast of the continent and human impacts are negligible. (I always wonder what these earthquakes in the middle of the ocean do to marine life there, however.)

If there is any big news about the recent earthquake in New Zealand and there are more, we'll keep you updated.
