New ESPN 12 years, nearly $ 500 million to carry Wimbledon was driven by the desire of the All England Club to have a means of communication only leads the tournament and show all live games - ending the previous practice of NBC tape delays.
"We felt it was important to have a single narrative through two weeks," said Ian Ritchie, executive director of the club, in a conference call Tuesday. He added: "We are positive that wanted to put on stage."
ESPN has the rights of cable for Wimbledon since 2003, but the new agreement gives all that NBC has had, including all of the semifinals and finals.
In talks in London last week, ESPN outbid Comcast Versus-NBC partnership, which could not guarantee a plan to live fully until 2014. After 43 years as keynote speaker of the tournament, NBC run was over.
ESPN will begin broadcasting its live broadcasts next year on ESPN, ESPN2, channel bandwidth, ESPN3 and mobile applications. Also broadcast the final of men and women on ABC at 3 pm EST on the day of the games.
"Living is preeminent," said Ritchie. "To live is the nature of the game now in the sport throughout the world, not only for tennis but for others."
Ritchie said he had in the past talks with NBC about changing its policy tape delay, but gave no further details.
"You understand from my comments that they live is important," he said.
A spokesman for NBC declined to comment on the comments of Ritchie.
NBC has for many years maintained a policy not to anticipate the very profitable "Today" to go to Wimbledon in the morning. The network membership rigid time intervals also resulted in a chaotic incident in 2009, when live coverage on ESPN2 Tommy Haas match Novak Djokovic was cut at 10 am, when NBC's coverage began . NBC led the Swiss Roger Federer, Ivo Karlovic in a match delayed for two hours, showed the rest of Haas-Djokovic.
ESPN estimated $ 40 million annual rights fee exceeds the combined total of $ 10 million paid under his previous contract and the $ 13 million was paid NBC
