PlayStation Network is currently down for maintenance at 5:00 PM PT - 6:00 PM PT. Sony has warned users about this scheduled maintenance, probably because it will only last an hour or so.

Sony Support:

"During this time you can:
* Not being able to access the PlayStation ® Store
* Having difficulty to log on PlayStation ® Network
* Not being able to play online games
* View a maintenance page when trying to access the PlayStation ® Network

Note: When you log into PlayStation Network, you may receive a message that says: "The PlayStation Network has been suspended." This does not mean that your account has been suspended, it simply means that the PlayStation Network has been disconnected. Please wait until the maintenance window has passed before attempting to connect to the PlayStation Network again. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. "

So even though Sony has not given the players a heads up that the service would be reduced, seems to have this under control.
